The Western Balkans are a geographical region of South-Eastern Europe. Together with Albania, there belong countries born from the dissolution of ex-Yugoslavia such as Kosovo, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro.

This territory is a natural bridge connecting Central Europe with the Mediterranean area. In fact, while its more northerly offshoots border the Danubian regions, the Albanian coasts are only a few nautical miles away from southern Italy.

Due to its particular geographical position, the region has always been a meeting place for peoples and civilizations. Over the centuries, this has led to the concentration of an extraordinary historical-cultural heritage, which includes some of the most important museums and archaeological sites in the Mediterranean area, together with unique artistic and architectural testimonies from the Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods.

The cultural richness is intertwined with a great naturalistic variety and the remarkable beauty of the landscapes: from the sea coast enlivened by deep fjords of the famous Albanian and Montenegrin rivieras, to the wide river valleys of the hinterland flanked by mighty mountains.

This fascinating territory is inhabited by ancient and tenacious peoples, each with its own strong cultural identity which is reflected in the great variety of local uses and traditions. The Balkans are in fact a true melting pot of ethnic groups, languages and religions, which fascinate travelers who decide to explore them today just like they did centuries ago.

Still largely off the beaten track of mass tourism, the Western Balkan territory attracts year after year increasing numbers of visitors from all over the world. The great political stability that has characterized the last two decades, together with the sustained speed of social and economic development, have contributed to make the region open and easily accessible from many world airports.
